The intermediate years at HFS provide a transition from the primary to middle school levels. This process is aided with an age appropriate focus on more independent academic work and study skills. The students develop higher level thinking skills moving from the concrete to the abstract. Many opportunities are provided for collaborative and independent learning. Research skills are fostered through use of technology and library resources.
Religion
At HFS, we strive to make Religion an integral part of life both inside and outside of our school. Children at this level develop an understanding of God as Father and Creator, a Christ-like respect for all people and a relationship with God through prayer. Students at each grade level plan and execute a service project, putting the gospel message into action.
Language Arts
Our Integrated Language Arts program encourages students to become fluent readers, effective communicators and skilled writers by providing the necessary skills to become life-long learners. Language Arts is an integrated program that develops literacy through reading, writing, speaking and listening skills. The integrated curriculum allows many opportunities for creative expression and alternative assessment.
Math
The Math programs allow the students to develop strong computational skills, building confidence in their mathematical ability. They are actively involved with hands-on materials, and technology is used in appropriate computational situations. Students are encouraged to apply learned skills and critical thinking techniques to problem solving scenarios and real-life situations.
Science
Students explore many facets of science including life, physical, earth and space both in classroom and science lab settings. Our program helps students to think critically, logically and analytically through exciting hands-on experiences and collaborative projects. Students use the scientific process to investigate the world around them by making predictions, conducting observations, interpreting data, drawing conclusions and communicating results.
Social Studies
Our social studies program explores geography, culture, religion, history, government and economic systems. Children gain an understanding of community and broaden their study to NJ, the regions of the US and to neighboring countries. Essential skills, such as reading maps and time lines, interpreting tables, charts and diagrams and identifying causes and their effects, are developed and practiced. Students are encouraged to apply critical thinking skills to make connections from the past to the present.
